Institute of Life Sciences

The Institute of Life Sciences works on biotechnology, biomedicine and the engineering translation of life sciences, in coordination with the Divisions of Innovative Medicine and Traditional Medicine. Its focus is on the scientific assessment and responsible use of African biological resources, and on moving promising laboratory findings toward engineering and products that can be deployed.

  • Build scientific documentation and data on African medicinal plants and biological resources.
  • Support early-stage research in biotechnology, biomaterials and natural-product engineering.
  • Run demonstration projects with universities, hospitals and enterprises.

Institute of Architectural and Construction Engineering

Hosted by the Division of Civil, Hydraulic and Architectural Engineering, this Institute focuses on building materials, structural engineering, construction methods and low-cost housing. Its work directly serves African urbanisation and housing demand, with an emphasis on appropriate construction under tropical, seismic and flood conditions.

  • Research local low-cost building materials and construction methods.
  • Document lessons from demonstration housing, schools and hospital projects.
  • Provide technical support for building codes and engineering quality improvement.

Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology

Hosted by the Division of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, this Institute focuses on the integration, demonstration and extension of agricultural technology. It does not pursue basic laboratory research; it adapts mature, appropriate agricultural engineering technologies for African rural settings and takes them to scale.

  • Integrate irrigation, mechanisation, storage and rural energy into locally appropriate solutions.
  • Build demonstration bases for agricultural engineering with local governments and enterprises.
  • Deliver short-cycle training for grassroots agricultural technicians.

Institute of Techno-Economics

Hosted by the Division of Engineering Management, Innovation and Economics, this Institute conducts economic evaluation of engineering technologies, technology-policy analysis and industrial competitiveness studies. It provides independent techno-economic judgement for governments and enterprises on major engineering investment, technology acquisition and industrial siting.

  • Carry out cost-benefit and whole-life assessment of major engineering works.
  • Examine the economics and appropriateness of key industrial technology pathways.
  • Publish techno-economic briefs for decision-makers.

Institute of Digital Governance

Hosted by the Division of Information Technology, this Institute focuses on e-government, data governance, AI governance, cybersecurity policy and digital inclusion. It examines the institutional environment in which digital technology is deployed across African public services and society, addressing how technology can be deployed and used responsibly.

  • Examine the engineering and institutional design of e-government and digital public services.
  • Provide policy advice on data protection, critical-infrastructure security and AI adoption.
  • Address digital access and skills equity in rural and underserved regions.
