AAE’s membership has three tiers: Fellows, Industry Researchers and Technical Engineers. They correspond to different types of contribution and modes of participation. All are nominated by peers, reviewed independently and elected or appointed through defined procedures.

Fellows are the core membership of AAE. Today they cover more than 40 African countries and number over 300, representing the highest level of professional standing in African engineering across academia, engineering practice and industry leadership.

  • Fellows are nominated by existing Fellows, reviewed by an independent review committee, confirmed by the Governing Board and elected by the General Assembly.
  • Fellowship is an honorific position; Fellows do not receive payment, but undertake the obligation to take part in the Academy’s work.
  • Fellows have the right to attend the General Assembly, to vote, to review and to nominate, and to use Academy resources.
  • The Fellowship is expected to reflect different genders, regions and engineering disciplines; review takes representation into account without lowering professional standards.
