AAE is organised into Divisions by engineering discipline, which serve as the academic home of Fellows and members, and into Research Institutes by major engineering theme, which serve as platforms for cross-disciplinary research and technical services. Divisions organise members, academic activities and peer review by discipline; Research Institutes organise research, advisory work and demonstration projects by problem area. Together they cover the main fields of engineering technology and provide the institutional backbone and professional support for engineering science and technology across Africa.

AAE currently has nine Divisions. On admission, each Fellow is affiliated to one Division according to primary discipline, and may take part in cross-Division activities as appropriate.

Division of Civil, Hydraulic and Architectural Engineering

This Division covers Africa’s most pressing infrastructure needs: roads and bridges, urban water supply and drainage, flood control and irrigation, housing and urban development, and ports and public buildings. Its work is grounded in African conditions — low-cost building materials, seismic and flood resilience, durability in tropical climates, sustainable construction and maintenance for small and medium cities, and engineering quality and safety standards.

  • Promote engineering solutions that are appropriate, affordable and maintainable for African urban and rural infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the development of local construction codes, standards and acceptance systems.
  • Provide independent advice on the planning, investment and technical design of major civil and hydraulic projects.

Division of Engineering Management, Innovation and Economics

Engineering is not only a technical undertaking but also a question of management and economics. This Division focuses on project management, engineering economics, innovation systems, industrial policy, and the relationship between engineering and development, situating engineering decisions within their economic and institutional context.

  • Examine project financing, procurement, contracting and risk management for major engineering works.
  • Contribute to industrial and technology policy discussions under the AU industrialisation agenda and the Continental Free Trade Area.
  • Provide independent cost-benefit, whole-life and externality assessments of major engineering decisions.

Division of Agricultural Engineering and Technology

Most of Africa’s population depends on agriculture, yet agricultural productivity and engineering intensity remain low. This Division covers irrigation and drainage, agricultural mechanisation, soil and water resources, post-harvest handling and food engineering, rural renewable energy and rural infrastructure — bringing engineering capability to the farm.

  • Promote agricultural machinery and water-saving irrigation suited to smallholders and family farms.
  • Address post-harvest loss, storage, primary processing and rural electrification.
  • Support agricultural engineering education and grassroots extension systems.

Division of Innovative Medicine

This Division treats medicine as an application domain of engineering, covering medical device engineering, hospital and public health facility engineering, appropriate technologies for primary care, telemedicine, medical imaging and biomaterials. Its focus is on the low-cost, maintainable medical technology that African primary care systems actually need.

  • Promote medical equipment and hospital technology suited to local power supply, maintenance capacity and workforce.
  • Address the engineering of telemedicine, mobile health and health data systems.
  • Support dialogue between medical engineering and clinical and public-health communities.

Division of Traditional Medicine

This Division is established as a separate unit in response to African realities. African countries are rich in traditional medicinal plants, and traditional medicine continues to play an important role in front-line care, yet it has long lacked systematic engineering, standardisation and scientific support. The Division treats traditional medicine as a dedicated engineering and scientific field.

  • Survey, document, conserve and promote the sustainable use of African traditional medicinal plant resources.
  • Develop standardisation, quality control, safety evaluation and pre-clinical norms for traditional medicines.
  • Advance formulation engineering, extraction processes, pharmaceutical equipment and medicinal-plant cultivation engineering.
  • Provide engineering pathways, intellectual-property and biodiversity policy advice for integrating traditional and modern medicine.

Division of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering underpins manufacturing and the operation of infrastructure. This Division covers general machinery, automotive and agricultural machinery, mining and construction machinery, power and transmission systems, and the mechanical capability needed for Africa’s industrial upgrading.

  • Build local capacity in manufacturing, maintenance and remanufacturing of mechanical equipment.
  • Align mechanical engineering education with industrial job requirements.
  • Provide technical advice on the import, adaptation and localisation of key equipment.

Division of Information Technology

This Division covers digital infrastructure, communications networks, software and data engineering, cybersecurity, AI applications and e-government. It is concerned with engineering pathways under African conditions of limited power and bandwidth, and with how digital technology can serve education, agriculture, health and public services.

  • Promote low-cost, maintainable digital infrastructure suited to African conditions.
  • Address the engineering implementation of data governance, cybersecurity and AI ethics.
  • Support the development of local software talent and digital engineering teams.

Division of Chemical and Materials Engineering

This Division covers petrochemicals and fine chemicals, mineral processing and metallurgy, new materials, construction materials, water-treatment chemicals and local chemical value chains. Its work asks how Africa’s resource endowments can be turned into local processing and materials industries through engineering.

  • Support local deep processing of minerals and agricultural produce, reducing raw-material exports.
  • Promote low-cost, low-carbon technologies for building materials and materials production.
  • Address chemical safety, environmental protection and occupational health engineering.

Division of Energy and Mining Engineering

Energy and mining are central to African industrialisation and improved welfare. This Division covers power systems, solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal and biomass energy, and the exploration, extraction and processing engineering of mineral resources.

  • Promote affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity supply across Africa.
  • Address off-grid and mini-grid systems for rural electrification.
  • Provide independent advice on engineering safety, resource utilisation and environmental restoration in mining.
