Every decision an engineer makes affects public safety, the environment and future generations. AAE requires all members and programme participants to observe the baseline principles of engineering ethics.

  • Put public safety, health and wellbeing above commercial interest and employer instruction.
  • Offer opinions and take engagements only within one’s own professional competence.
  • Report risks, uncertainties and failures honestly, without concealment or downplaying.
  • Protect the legitimate rights of people involved in research and projects, and observe data and intellectual-property rules.
  • Declare and recuse from matters in which there is a conflict of interest.

AAE maintains a code of conduct and an appeals mechanism. Depending on the seriousness of a breach, a member may receive a warning, suspension or removal, following a process set out in the charter that provides the member with a right of appeal.
